Best doorbell cameras without a subscription in Canada

Most people find out about the subscription after the doorbell is on the wall. Without one, several popular doorbells will show you a live view and nothing else — no recording, no history. These ones do not need it.

Some links in this guide go to Amazon.ca. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It costs you nothing, and it does not change what we recommend.

What "no subscription" should actually mean

The test is simple: if you never pay a monthly fee, can you still scroll back through yesterday and download a clip? A doorbell that only gives you live view and a notification without a plan is not a no-subscription doorbell, whatever the box says.

The ones that pass record to somewhere you own — a memory card in the doorbell, a small hub inside the house, or a recorder that the rest of your cameras also use. Cloud storage is then an optional extra, not the price of entry.

Wired, if you can

If there is already a doorbell button at the door, there are already low-voltage wires there, and a wired video doorbell will run off them. No batteries to charge, no sleeping between events, and it records continuously or on motion without worrying about battery life.

Winter is the other reason. Lithium batteries do not like charging below freezing, and a battery doorbell on a north-facing door in January can go flat faster than you expect. A wired one does not care.

The best version of wired is PoE — one network cable carrying both power and data. It needs a cable run to the door, but it is the most reliable doorbell you can buy, and it records to the same recorder as your other cameras.

  • Reolink Video Doorbell (PoE)

Power and data on one network cable. Records to a microSD card in the doorbell, or to a Reolink recorder alongside your other cameras. No plan needed.

  • Lorex 2K Wired Video Doorbell

Runs off existing doorbell wiring and records to a memory card. A straightforward swap for a standard doorbell button.

Battery, when there is no wiring

Rentals, doors with no existing button, or a side door you just want eyes on — battery is the right call there. Choose one that stores footage locally, and expect to charge it more often in winter.

Mount it out of direct wind if you can, and keep a second battery or charging routine in mind for January.

  • eufy Video Doorbell E340 (dual camera)

A second downward-facing camera shows parcels left at the door. Stores clips locally, so no monthly fee to keep recordings. Battery or wired.

  • TP-Link Tapo battery video doorbell with hub

Battery doorbell that records to a memory card in the indoor hub, which also works as the chime. A low-cost way into local recording.

Things the reviews skip

Check your door frame before you buy. Most video doorbells are wider than a standard button, and a narrow trim may need a wedge or a different mounting position.

Mind the WiFi at the front door. A doorbell is often the furthest point from the router, behind brick, and a weak signal shows up as missed motion and delayed notifications. If the door struggles for signal, that is a network problem first and a doorbell problem second.

Common questions

Can a doorbell camera work without WiFi?

A PoE doorbell can — it connects over a network cable instead. Battery and wired-to-button doorbells need WiFi to send notifications and live view, although some will keep recording to their card if WiFi drops.

Will my existing chime still work?

Usually, with a wired doorbell — most come with a small adapter for the chime box. Battery doorbells generally use their own plug-in chime or hub instead.

Do they work in Canadian winters?

Wired and PoE doorbells handle cold well. Battery models are the ones to think about, because lithium batteries charge poorly below freezing — check the operating temperature on the listing and expect more charging in January.
